Studio Notes

Clockwise from Top Left: Hollow ancient Cypress along Cypress Creek, truck bed full of new sculpture blanks, new wood blanks on my workbench, huge pecan slabs at a mill in Lockhart, TX.
People often ask where I get the wood for my sculptures. Rarely does it come from what you’d think of as a typical hardwood store.
Most of it comes from downed trees after storms, offcuts from other makers, or small independent mills. Earlier this month I took a three-day trip through central Texas and visited six of those mills.
A lot of the pieces I bring home come from burn piles—sections cut away as “unusable” and set aside to be destroyed.
It feels a bit like a treasure hunt, except you have to keep a close eye out for snakes and scorpions.
I've already begun a few new sculptures that will end up in an upcoming show - stay tuned for more information on that in months to come.
And now its time to get back to the workbench.
